An ND filter, or Neutral Density filter, is a type of camera filter that reduces the amount of light entering the camera lens without affecting the color or hue of the image. It’s essentially like putting sunglasses on your camera. ND filters come in different strengths, measured in stops, to block varying amounts of light. They are commonly used in photography and cinematography to achieve effects like blurring motion in bright light, allowing for wider apertures in daylight, or balancing exposure between the sky and the foreground in landscape photography.
The right ND filter depends on your shooting conditions and creative goals:
1-3 Stops (ND2-ND8) → Light control for shallow depth of field in bright conditions (portraits, general photography).
6-10 Stops (ND64-ND1000) → Long exposure for waterfalls, landscapes, or removing people from a scene.
15+ Stops (ND32000+) → Extreme long exposures (5-10 minutes or more), daytime motion blur, etc.
In video, ND filters help maintain the 180-degree shutter rule, which means keeping shutter speed at double the frame rate (e.g., 1/50s for 24fps video). Without an ND filter, bright light can force higher shutter speeds, making motion look unnatural.
