A common question that people have while converting their camera to full-spectrum is whether or not they can still shoot in “regular light.” The short answer is yes, you absolutely can. The long answer is that with an external filter that’s designed to cut UV and IR light, the image will be taken within the visible light spectrum but some filters can just be a bit off in auto white balance.
This is exactly why we’re proud to introduce the next generation of filters of its kind, the Kolari Hot Mirror Pro 2. With more than 50 layers of optical coating put on over a 10 hour period, each Hot Mirror Pro 2 is made with quality and precision in mind.
When we introduced our original hot mirror filter, we optimized the spectral response to match the cameras that were on the market at the time as closely as possible. Now almost 10 years later, cameras have changed and our filter manufacturing capabilities have improved. We may have had the best hot mirror on the market already, but we’ve taken things a step further and outdone ourselves with the Hot Mirror Pro 2. We can now achieve even higher color accuracy and virtually identical performance to stock cameras with an auto white balance. We achieve all of this while also mounting the filter into our newest precision brass rings so you can feel the true quality of the product. The new brass rings thread perfectly and make installation easier even when you shoot with gloves on in the winter. The Kolari Hot Mirror Pro 2 feels just as good as it looks.
Our first iteration, the Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Color Correcting Hot Mirror Filter, had extremely close color accuracy but had some mixed results when used on auto white balance. The second generation, the Kolari Hot Mirror Pro 2 takes this impressive level of accuracy and gets in even closer to the color output achieved with a stock camera. We measured hundreds of original camera sensor filter transmissions from modern era cameras and plotted their transmission curves. We found that there is some variation between individual cameras and brands, and we spent the last year testing and refining a filter to match the average transmission of a modern digital camera.
Most camera brands use both a blue absorbing filter and a UV/IR coated filter to cut UV and IR to ideal levels for visible shooting. We offered our two spectrum conversion as our way of mimicking this process before, but now instead of stacking two filters together, we’ve combined them into one product.

All shots taken for these comparisons were done with Canon RPs, one stock and one with a full spectrum conversion. Each set of photos was taken with the same ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, and using an auto white balance.
Ultra-Wide Lens Disclaimer:Â Our UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Pro 2 will produce color vignetting at ultra-wide angles, except for our clip-in formats. This appears as green/blue-tinted corners when shooting at focal ranges wider than 30mm. We recommend using this filter with lenses no wider than 16mm for APS-C cameras, or 30mm for Full Frame cameras.
Incompatibility Disclaimer: Due to the design of our Gen 3 rings, some lens hood may not be able to fit around them to be properly attached to the lens itself. This is true for the Telephoto 52mm Drop-In, as well. In most cases, where this issue is present, it can be mitigated by using our original, longer but narrower, Standard filter ring. This is present on our original Hot Mirror filter. Absolutely! For accurate shipping costs, please enter your complete shipping address during the checkout process. Some locations may be subject to a remote area surcharge via FedEx Express. 60-Day Hassle-free Returns
If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, Kolari accepts returns on most products within 60 days of purchase. We can either provide exchanges in the form of store credit, which can be used sitewide, or we can issue full refunds via the method you originally used for payment. To be eligible for a full refund, the product must be in new, mint condition, including all original, undamaged packaging materials and accessories. Items that are damaged, dirty, dented, scratched, or missing major components may be denied for return. Kolari is not responsible for personal data or items left inside of returned merchandise.
Prior Approval
All returns must be pre-approved by Kolari before items are sent back. To initiate a return or exchange, please send an email to contact@kolarivision.com with your name, order number, and reason for return. Once the return has been approved, you will receive an RMA/packing slip that must be included in the return shipment. Unless the incorrect product was received or your product arrived damaged or defective, you are responsible for all return shipping costs. Kolari strongly recommends purchasing tracking and insurance when sending items. Kolari will not take responsibility for any returns lost or damaged in the mail.
Damaged, Defective, or Incorrect Items
It is important to thoroughly inspect all items upon delivery. If you receive a damaged, defective, or incorrect product, please email us at contact@kolarivision.com within 14 days of product delivery to file a claim. Once a claim has been filed, we will work with you to solve the problem.
Non-returnable Items
International Returns
International customers or customers in U.S. territories are responsible for both return shipping and any duties associated with the return. Original shipping costs, import duties and taxes are also non-refundable.
Shipping Fees
Refunds do not include any shipping charges on the initial order. Items purchased with free shipping will still receive a full refund on the value of the item. The customer is responsible for all return shipping charges to send the product back to Kolari. Kolari cannot provide return labels at this time.
Restocking Fee
If any condition of the return policy listed above is not met, Kolari reserves the right to reject the return entirely or impose a restocking fee of 20% of the purchase price of the item, not including shipping. If a returned item is unopened or appears to be in brand-new condition, including packaging and accessories, the restocking fee will be waived.
PayPal Fee
All returned orders that were paid via PayPal will incur a non-refundable fee of 5% of the purchase price of the item, not including shipping. The PayPal fee will be automatically waived if you choose to accept your refund as store credit, which can be used for purchases sitewide.
FAQs:
Can I return used gear?
All used gear sales are final and not eligible for a return unless the product in question is damaged or defective upon delivery or not as described. If used gear is found to be damaged, defective or not as described, it must be reported within 14 days of purchase for potential return.
Can I return converted cameras?
All of our cameras are made to order upon your request. Due to the custom nature of our converted cameras, all converted camera sales are final and not eligible for a return, however, they are covered by our warranty. For warranty details please refer to the specific product page.
Can I return my order after the 60-day return period?
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any returns outside of our 60-day return period. If you’re having issues with any of our products, please send an email to contact@kolarivision.com and we’ll be more than happy to help or troubleshoot your issue.
What if I purchased Kolari products from another site and/or seller?
For purchases made through third-party resellers such as Amazon, B&H, Adorama, eBay, or others, customers will need to contact the vendor directly for any exchange or return requests. Unfortunately, we are unable to process refunds for purchases made through these resellers.
Who is responsible for shipping costs?
The customer is responsible for all return shipping costs, including optional tracking and insurance, unless the item that was received was incorrect, damaged, or defective, in which case Kolari will provide you shipping instructions to return the item at our cost.
