Description

We are now offering infrared modifications and repairs for Medium Format Digital Back cameras. We can either swap your original UV/IR Cut filter with a Schott BG39 OR Schott BG60 replacement glass. Or, we can allow your camera to capture UV and IR with our full spectrum quartz Pro AR Anti-Smudge coated glass.

*** Please note that glass is custom made to order for this service and can allow for a ~3-4 week lead time***

What’s the difference between BG39 and BG60? BG60 is a highly specialized glass made by Schott that is inherently corrosion resistant, even before we put an additional protective anti-reflective and anti-smudge coating to seal from the environment. This filter cannot corrode by design, even if the coatings get scratched. BG39 glass contains a protective anti-reflective and anti-smudge coating to seal it against corrosion. Color and optical performance is virtually identical to the BG60 glass, however this glass may corrode over time if the coatings get scratched or worn off.

Lifetime warranty against corrosion: We cover all Schott BG39 and BG60 glass we install for life against corrosion. If your glass experiences corrosion after our installation, we can cover the cost of replacement glass, but unfortunately, cannot cover the associated installation fees ($150).

For domestic (US) customers this coverage includes the cost of return shipping. For international customers we require shipping both ways to be covered by the customer.

To open a glass warranty service claim please contact our customer support team via email (contact@kolarivision.com) and provide the original order number if possible. We can provide a coupon code to place a new replacement service through our website at the pricing described above.

Processing Time

Our standard turnaround time for camera conversions is 2 weeks on average for most models once the camera has been received. This is only an estimate and not a guarantee. Our standard turnaround time may occasionally exceed 2 weeks during our busy season (April-August) or take less than 2 weeks in our off-season (September-March).

We also offer 5-day and 1-2 day rush processing options on our camera conversions for an additional fee. Our rush services allow us to coordinate the logistics of your conversion ahead of time to meet your deadlines to the best of our ability. Our rush processing time does not include shipping times.

We do our best to accommodate each and every one of our customers year-round.

If ordering one of our pre-converted cameras, please keep in mind that they are made to order and are not eligible for rush processing. For most camera models we need to order these in to our facility which adds some lead time. We’ll inform you if we encounter any additional delays or issues with stock availability. Please allow at least 2 weeks before your camera ships out to you and plan for trips and assignments accordingly!

Any time frames that we provide, including shipping time, turnaround time, and rush processing times, are only estimates and are subject to availability. We make no guarantees on service time or shipping times.

AR Coating

What is the AR coating and what does it do? The AR coating option adds an IR centered anti-reflective coating onto the IR filter we install when we perform an infrared conversion. It reduces hotspot artifacts that some lenses are prone to, and can reduce other stray reflections. On our full spectrum conversions we apply a broadband AR coating that covers the UV, visible, and IR ranges. The coating does not reduce optical performance in any way and is highly recommended.

Background:

Uncoated glass has a reflection of around 4-5% at all wavelengths, and we found that this reflection off the sensor filter was bouncing off the glass and reflecting back from the lens housing and aperture blades to cause IR hotspots.  We developed this anti-reflective coating that is centered around the IR wavelengths that cause hotspots, and reduced the 5% reflection down to <0.5%

Conversion AR Coating

When applied to our internal conversion filters, we find that hotspots are significantly reduced during infrared photography. Below is a sample from a Nikon 50mm 1.8 which has a strong hotspot at small apertures. Independent tests also available from Mark Hilliard here and Edd Noble here.
